Sources are looked up in open databases — Crossref, Open Library or the page itself. AI steps in only when a lookup finds nothing, and your query is not stored.

Free bibliography generator: keep up to 200 references in your browser, with the newest ones at the top. Copy all alphabetizes the references in APA, MLA, Chicago Author-Date or Harvard style. Existing references are never deleted automatically. No account needed.

Why This Bibliography Generator Is Different

Free bibliography generator: keep up to 200 references in your browser, with the newest ones at the top. Copy all alphabetizes the references in APA, MLA, Chicago Author-Date or Harvard style. Existing references are never deleted automatically. No account needed.

Step by step

How to Use the Free Bibliography Generator

Add sources as you research

Always paste each URL, DOI or ISBN right after using the source; your future self will thank you at 2 a.m. on the eve of the submission deadline.

Keep one style

Choose APA, MLA, Chicago, or Harvard, and remain consistent because inconsistency in referencing styles is the most frequent bibliographic mistake.

Copy the finished list

A single click brings you the alphabetically ordered “works cited” page that can be pasted into your paper.

The honest part

100% Free — Here Is Why That Is Sustainable

Lookups are made against freely available open databases (Crossref for papers, Open Library for books, and the page itself for websites), with the extremely rare exception where the lookup falls back to the AI, which runs on our own servers. The cost per citation is negligible. This is why there is no paywall, no watermark, and no trial period: free is the price, not a trial.

Completely free, all the way through: from citation creation to automatic alphabetical organization and then copying your list. No sign up required, no restrictions on number of exports and no premium citation style, because the data is freely accessible from public databases.

The Bibliography Generator in Real Student Life

How it works

How to make a bibliography as you research

Got a source? Paste the URL, DOI, ISBN or just the title and hit Generate citation. The entry lands in My bibliography, and the list keeps growing as your paper does.

At the end, one click on Copy all and you have an alphabetical bibliography for the last page.

Styles

Bibliography format in APA, MLA, Chicago or Harvard

Select only one style and stick to it throughout your list; mixing styles is the most common error made when creating a bibliography.

The bibliography maker will format books, web pages and journal articles based on the standards of the selected style. In the case of the Chicago style, it employs the author-date citation system, so it also works as a Chicago bibliography generator.

Annotations

Annotated bibliography format: what this tool does

The annotated bibliography requires writing some information about each source after citing it. The information may include the content of the source and its importance concerning the topic at hand.

This tool will provide you with the citations and it’s up to you to write the annotations. It is therefore not an annotated bibliography generator, but it saves the slow part: copy the list, then add two or three sentences under each entry.

School projects

A bibliography for a school project

A bibliography for a project lists all the sources that you use, alphabetically according to their authors. A bibliography for school project work usually covers a website, a book, and an article, each formatted differently.

There is no bibliography template to fill in; all you have to do is insert a source and the bibliography creator does the formatting.

Free

An automatic bibliography generator, free

This automatic bibliography generator is available for free and does not require any registration, with no export limits.

The bibliography is saved in your browser and hence it will survive a page refresh, but deleting your browser data will delete the list too. A bibliography builder you can bookmark as your bibliography generator website for the whole semester.

Manual vs generated citations

Which is actually faster

Hand formatting a citation takes 2 to 4 minutes, and getting one punctuation mark wrong is much more common than people would like to admit. Generating a citation takes only seconds and applies the same rule across 40 different references.

Verification is the last task left for humans and it only requires fifteen seconds per source, and it is worth doing when something seems odd.

Who needs it most

Everyday users of this tool

First-year undergraduates dealing with their first essay requiring references, postgraduate students working on literature reviews with sixty sources, or individuals switching courses and having to change writing styles. That last group is exactly why the style selector was created.

If something goes wrong

Three fixes that solve most problems

  • The lookup found nothing. Swap the identifier. Use the DOI if it's an article, the ISBN if it's a book, the full URL if it's a web page. A few obscure or paywalled sources share no open data at all, and then the only option is typing the details in by hand.
  • The author or date is missing. Then the source simply didn't publish it. That's covered by the style rules (title first, n.d. in place of the date), and the generator applies them and marks the entry so you know to check it.
  • My professor wants a different variant. House styles are out there, including one for Harvard. Find the most appropriate style, and tweak the two or three things that your department wants changed.
Terms worth knowing

The vocabulary around bibliography generators

  • Works cited vs bibliography — Works Cited is just what you cited; a bibliography may be everything you looked at.
  • Alphabetical order — By the last name of the author, or by the title in cases where there is no author at all. The Copy all button applies this automatically.
  • Hanging indent — Apply after pasting into your document; every style requires it.
  • Annotated bibliography — A list of sources, each accompanied by a brief summary and critical assessment written by you, based on your notes.

Is it really free, with no catch?

Of course: no registration, no watermark and no daily paywall. It will still be here next semester.

One page for each job is deliberate. Near-identical pages for every wording are standard SEO, and they're the reason looking for a basic tool is a slog. We'd rather build one good page that's quick, complete and upfront about what it can't do.

This is why the navigation above links to complete tool names and not cute nicknames: when your next job comes around, you will know where to go by reading, not guessing. The whole set is designed for someone in a rush who has never seen it before, and on a deadline, that is all of us.

Bibliography Generator FAQ

Works cited (MLA) contains only the sources cited in your writing; the bibliography may contain all sources which have been used by you. The same format applies to both cases, and this tool builds both.

Yes. Hit Copy all and the list comes out sorted by the authors' surnames, which is how every one of these styles wants it.

It stays put in your browser (we don't store it), so you can come back tomorrow and carry on. Clear your browsing data, though, and it's gone, so copy it somewhere when you finish.

Of course, real bibliographies are always a mix. Books, websites and articles each follow their own rules inside the style you picked, and the tool knows which is which.

Completely free, all the way through: from citation creation to automatic alphabetical organization and then copying your list. No sign up required, no restrictions on number of exports and no premium citation style, because the data is freely accessible from public databases.
