Why This Em Dash Remover Is Different
A free em dash remover: paste in up to 100,000 characters and it counts the em dashes, en dashes and smart quotes, then replaces the ones you select with commas, full stops, colons, hyphens or spaces. The density figure shows how much punctuation there is, but doesn't indicate whether the text was written by an AI.
How to Use the Free Em Dash Remover
Directly from the document, the chat box or the piece you are working on.
This metric measures how many em dashes there are per 1,000 words (punctuation on its own is not counted as a word). It is a writing metric and has nothing to do with AI detection.
A comma is the natural choice for most sentences. A full stop is what you use when the dash separates two complete sentences, and in such cases splitting them improves readability.
Read it again: the use of varied punctuation is a real improvement and not merely cosmetic.
100% Free — Here Is Why That Is Sustainable
No server needed: the tool runs as JavaScript in your browser, therefore not costing us anything per use. This is the reason why it's free, and why your grades, notes, or signatures remain on your device.
No. The cleaning is done in your browser. Up to 100,000 input characters, the cleaned result and your options are stored in sessionStorage for this tab, so they come back when you Refresh or go Back. The Clear button removes the draft and resets the options.
The Em Dash Remover in Real Student Life
What is an em dash?
The em dash (—) is the long dash that is roughly equivalent in length to the letter M and which is used to offset an interjection or to connect two ideas.
An en dash (–), on the other hand, is a shorter one and generally serves to indicate a range, say 10–20. The em dash meaning in a sentence is a more emphatic break than the comma and a less formal connection than the colon.
Em dash vs en dash: which one to remove
The long em dash is used for connecting clauses, whereas the en dash is used primarily between numbers and dates.
Both em and en dashes are counted by the utility, and you have the option of turning off one or the other prior to cleaning. The en dash between two numbers converts to a hyphen: 2019–2024 converts to 2019-2024.
Replace em dash with a comma, full stop or colon
Select the appropriate punctuation symbol that will replace the dash: the comma, the full stop, the colon, the hyphen, or perhaps even a space. Commas can be used for most of them.
A full stop can be used in place of a dash which was originally put between two independent clauses. You won't get double punctuation: dashes preceding commas/full stops are deleted, and the first letter following a full stop is capitalized.
Remove em dashes from text written with AI
Em dash use varies with the writer, the genre and the style guide, so no single number proves anything about a text. The counter shows how many em dashes your draft has per 1,000 words, and you decide what to keep.
Want to remove em dashes from text an AI drafted for you? This AI em dash converter needs no AI at all: it replaces them in your browser, so you can remove em dash marks from a whole draft in one click.
A free dash remover that keeps your text local
This em dash remover works right inside your browser. The draft is not uploaded anywhere, there is no signup and no usage limit.
Smart quotes and ellipses can be fixed together with the dashes, and Use as input returns the cleaned text to the input box for another pass.
Why not just use find and replace?
Find and replace swaps every dash for the same thing, so you end up with a comma followed by another comma and small letters after new full stops.
The tool drops a dash that sits next to other punctuation, capitalizes the word after a new full stop and keeps number ranges as they are.
Everyday users of this tool
Students who clean up a draft before submitting it, writers who edit text that came out of a chat window, and anyone who pastes into a form that breaks on curly quotes.
Three fixes that solve most problems
- Nothing was replaced. Tick the checkboxes above the text: em dashes and en dashes are checked by default, smart quotes and ellipses are unchecked. The hyphen (-) is not a dash and is never changed.
- The sentence reads oddly. It is true that a comma does not fit every sentence. Set Replace with to Full stop or Colon, clean the text again and reread it.
- Quotes still look curly. Smart quotes are disabled by default. Select smart quotes and click Clean text again to change them to straight quotes.
Same tool, many names
However you searched for it, this is the page. It's a single em dash remover, quick and private, and not ten thin copies of the same thing scattered around a website. Save it under whichever name you'll remember:
Of course: no registration, no watermark and no daily paywall. It will still be here next semester.
One page for each job is deliberate. Near-identical pages for every wording are standard SEO, and they're the reason looking for a basic tool is a slog. We'd rather build one good page that's quick, complete and upfront about what it can't do.
This is why the navigation above links to complete tool names and not cute nicknames: when your next job comes around, you will know where to go by reading, not guessing. The whole set is designed for someone in a rush who has never seen it before, and on a deadline, that is all of us.
Em Dash Remover FAQ
Partly personal taste. Many human authors are big fans (Emily Dickinson used them extensively), and dashes are useful for separating clauses or adding an aside, so some texts have more of them than others. This tool will simply count them and help you edit them. It won't tell you whether a human or an AI wrote the text.
The number of dashes that's fine is decided by your style guide (perhaps one per paragraph in a newspaper, but none at all in a legal brief). Check each dash within its sentence. The counter tells you how many dashes there are per 1,000 words, but provides no indication about the author.
Generally, a comma. In cases where the dash was used to connect two independent clauses, a full stop would be better, which will help improve the clarity of the writing. A colon can be used when the second clause provides an explanation for the first one.
Unfortunately we can't promise that. No one can guarantee what a detector will do, and changing the punctuation guarantees nothing. The tool will simply change the punctuation you've chosen and show the numbers. It does not check whether the text was written by an AI.
The curly quotes and apostrophes added automatically by word processors and chat apps can lead to problems within code and forms; additionally, the inclusion of these marks in the pasted document indicates that it has been cut and pasted from another source.
