Compress Images to Any Size Limit

An image size reducer can change encoding quality, pixel dimensions or both. To reduce image size without losing quality that matters on screen, start with Balanced quality and set a sensible maximum width instead of crushing a full-resolution phone photo.

Hit an exact KB limit automatically

The solution is to attack both; reduce the dimensions to what the destination will actually display, then compress

JPG, PNG and WEBP supported

A form that displays your photo at 800 pixels wide gains nothing by having a 6000 pixel original

Batch: several images in one pass

The bulk image compressor accepts mixed JPG, PNG and WEBP files. Add a maximum width when you need to compress image without losing quality at the size where it will actually be displayed.

Step by step

How to Use the Image Compressor Tool

Drop your images

One or many. JPG, PNG and WEBP all work, and they can be mixed.

Choose a target

Pick a quality level, or select “Fit a size limit” and type the exact KB the portal allows — the tool binary-searches quality until it fits.

Download

Each image comes back compressed, with the before/after size shown so you can see exactly what was saved.

Under the hood

Why file size and image dimensions are different problems

There are two factors that determine the file size of a digital image: the number of pixels it contains, and the amount of “crushing” that has been applied to it in order to reduce the file size. Quality-based compression usually targets the second factor, reducing the amount of extraneous detail in the image. This can be done quite effectively until you start getting into images that contain a sheer amount of detail (such as a 6000 pixel wide photo taken with a phone camera), at which point even the most extreme compression begins to take a toll on the overall quality in the form of visible artefacts.

The honest part

The solution is to attack both; reduce the dimensions to what the destination will actually display, then compress. A form that displays your photo at 800 pixels wide gains nothing by having a 6000 pixel original. This is why this tool provides a Max width field, along with the target quality; together they allow you to stay under any limit, while keeping the image nice and sharp at the actual size it will be displayed at.

The Image Compressor in Real Student Life

How it works

Compress image files to a chosen limit

Drop one or more files, choose a quality preset or enter the exact KB target, then download the result. The image compressor searches for the highest JPEG quality that still fits.

This is the direct workflow for anyone asking how to reduce file size before a portal, email or form will accept a photo.

Exact targets

Compress image to 1MB, 200KB, 100KB or 50KB

Select Fit a size limit and enter 1024 to compress image to 1MB, 200 to compress image to 200KB, 100 to compress image to 100KB, or 50 to compress image to 50KB.

Very small targets may require a lower maximum width as well as stronger compression.

Formats

JPG compressor, PNG and JPEG input

Use the same control to compress JPEG photos, compress PNG screenshots or process WEBP input. The compressor tries JPEG encoding. When that is no smaller and no resize is needed, it keeps the original file and format.

Resized output is JPEG; a warning identifies any increase in file size. If transparency must remain, use Image Resizer with PNG output.

Photos

Photo compressor for forms and email

A photo compressor works best when dimensions match the destination. A 6000-pixel original adds no visible detail to a form that displays an 800-pixel image.

Set Max width first, then compress photo quality. That combination can reduce file size of image uploads without making the displayed result look soft.

Batch work

Bulk image compressor in the browser

Add several photos and the bulk image compressor handles them in one pass, showing the original and compressed size for each file.

There is no upload or account. The best image compressor setting is the lightest one that meets the destination limit while preserving the detail you need.

Dimensions vs quality

Two ways to reduce image size

Quality controls how aggressively pixels are encoded. Width and height control how many pixels exist. Changing both is usually more effective than forcing either setting to an extreme.

For a screen upload, reducing unused resolution often preserves more visible detail than repeated quality cuts.

Private processing

Why a browser compressor is useful

ID photos, medical scans and application documents remain on your device. Canvas performs the conversion locally and the result is available as soon as the browser finishes.

If something goes wrong

Three fixes that solve most problems

  • The file is still too large. Set a smaller Max width as well as the KB target; a high-resolution original may not fit through quality reduction alone.
  • Small text looks soft. Use Light quality or keep more pixels. Screenshots and line art show compression artefacts sooner than photographs.
  • Transparency disappeared. JPEG has no transparency. Use the Image Resizer and keep PNG when the alpha channel matters.

Is it really free, with no catch?

Yes — no signup, no watermark, no daily paywall. It will be here, unchanged and unmetered, next semester too.

One page per job is a conscious decision. The alternative would be a dozen near-identical pages, one for each phrasing, which is standard SEO practice, but which produces the thin, interchangeable content that makes finding anything simple as frustrating as searching for a screwdriver in a hardware store. We prefer this page to be the good one: fast, comprehensive, honest about its limitations, and worth bookmarking. The phrasing you arrived by will then cease to matter.

That's also why the navigation above has full tool names rather than clever abbreviations: if the next thing you're tasked with is something new to you, you can find the one page you need by skimming, not by thinking. The whole setup is optimized for speed by someone who hasn't seen it before (which is all of us, on a deadline).

Image Compressor FAQ

Drop it above, choose “Fit a size limit”, type 500, and download. The compressor tries progressively lower quality settings until the file is under your limit, then stops — so you get the best quality that still fits rather than a needlessly crushed image.

Yes, that's the trade, but modern JPEG compression is fantastically good at concealing it. At Balanced, most photos will lose 60-80% of their file size with no visible loss on a screen, and text screenshots and line art will be better represented with Light quality.

No. The compression runs entirely in your browser using canvas, so the image never goes anywhere. That's important for scanning ID's, medical records and anything else you might not want to share with an upload service.

Yes — add up to 20 images, with a combined size of up to 200 MB. Each result shows its own before/after size.

Yes. PNG and WEBP are usually re-encoded as JPEG. If re-encoding does not make the file smaller and no resize is needed, the original file and format are kept. Resized output is JPEG even if it is larger, with a warning. To preserve transparency when resizing, use Image Resizer with PNG output.

Some images cannot reach a small KB target through quality reduction alone. Set Max width below the width shown on that result, then retry, or choose a larger size limit. A Max width above the current image width will not reduce its dimensions.
