Why This Remove Line Breaks Is Different

Remove line breaks from text that has been copied from a PDF document or email. In “Smart Mode,” broken lines are joined automatically, maintaining paragraphs and bullet points and rejoining hyphenated words, and it can remove extra spaces too. No upload; completely free.

Step by step

How to Use the Free Remove Line Breaks

Paste the broken text

Right out of the PDF, email client, or terminal, with no cleaning required beforehand.

Choose a mode

Pick Smart for prose, then take a quick look at where the paragraphs split. Remove every line break gives you one flat block. Collapse blank lines only keeps a single blank line wherever there were several (lines holding only spaces count as blank) and keeps the rest of your text exactly as it is.

Check the options

Joining of hyphens: Rejoins “prepara-” + “tion”. Preserving the list: Keeps bulleted or numbered lines on separate lines.

Copy the clean text

Paste it into your document, essay or notes in the form of continuous paragraphs.

The honest part

The Remove Line Breaks in Real Student Life

Smart mode

Remove line breaks from text copied out of a PDF

The text that is copied from PDF files will be broken down into very short lines. Using the smart mode will join all the lines within each sentence.

It will maintain the original paragraphs and rejoin a word split by the hyphen used at the end of a line. Bulleted and numbered lists keep their own lines, so you can remove line breaks without turning a list into one paragraph.

Modes

Remove new lines, empty lines or paragraph breaks

How far do you want to go? Remove every line break and you get one long block, which is also the way to remove paragraph breaks and join lines into a single paragraph.

Collapse blank lines only keeps your layout and just deals with the gaps: use it to remove empty lines, and each pile of blank lines between paragraphs becomes one.

Spaces

Remove extra spaces and double spaces

Check the “fix double spaces” box and the line break remover will also squish any multiple spaces into a single space, and trim the spaces remaining at the end of each line.

This is the quick way to remove double spaces when text has been copied out of a PDF file. Want to remove spaces from text entirely? This is not the tool for the job: it keeps one space between words and only removes extra spaces.

Carriage returns

Remove carriage returns from Windows and email text

All lines from documents that originate from Windows applications or older email clients have carriage returns at the end of the lines, in addition to line breaks.

The program does not differentiate between the two, so you remove carriage returns in one single operation. Hard-wrapped email quotations become regular paragraphs.

Free and private

A free text cleaner tool that runs in your browser

This remove line breaks tool operates directly on your computer. No information is being uploaded, so your private file can be pasted without any risk, and there is no registration or any limit to use it.

“Use as input” puts the output back in the same box and allows running this clean text tool with another option. A simple text cleaner for essays, notes and emails.

Cleaner vs manual editing

Why not just fix it by hand?

Removing each line break individually is effective when dealing with a small paragraph; however, in the case of a whole page from a PDF file, one would have to do hundreds of keystrokes and would still miss a few hyphens.

With Smart mode, all of this can be done in just one click, and your original paragraph divisions and lists remain intact.

Who saves the most time

Everyday users of this tool

Students quoting from a PDF reading, researchers moving notes from one app to another, and anybody who has ever pasted an old email into a document and watched it fall apart.

If something goes wrong

Three fixes that solve most problems

  • Everything became one paragraph. You are in Remove every line break mode. Change to Smart: keep paragraphs and clean the text again.
  • Lists got joined. Do tick keep bullet lists. Lines that are started by a bullet, dash, or number will then stay on a line of their own.
  • A word is still split. Tick rejoin hyphen-split words. It performs this task only at the end of the line, so words such as state-of-the-art remain intact.

One page for each job is deliberate. Near-identical pages for every wording are standard SEO, and they're the reason looking for a basic tool is a slog. We'd rather build one good page that's quick, complete and upfront about what it can't do.

This is why the navigation above links to complete tool names and not cute nicknames: when your next job comes around, you will know where to go by reading, not guessing. The whole set is designed for someone in a rush who has never seen it before, and on a deadline, that is all of us.

Remove Line Breaks FAQ

The PDF file treats each visual line as a distinct text run; the file knows nothing about where your paragraphs are; it simply knows where each line was drawn. This means that when you copy text from the PDF file, it takes along with it all those line breaks, and this is what destroys the paragraph.

Smart looks for blank lines, sentence endings followed by capitals, headings ending in a colon, indented paragraph openings and list markers. A short line on its own does not count as a paragraph. Check the output: paragraph detection is a heuristic.

When a word is cut with a hyphen at a line end and the next line carries on in lowercase (indented or not), Smart and Remove every line break can put it back together. Hyphens in the middle of a line are never touched. If a compound word got split at the break, give it a quick check or just turn rejoining off. Collapse blank lines only won’t rejoin anything.

Yes, when selecting the list option: bullet points, dash points, or numbers would be on their own line, while regular lines would merge.

For email it’s great. We paste old threads with hard-wrapped quotes all the time and they come out as normal paragraphs. For code we’d be careful. Use “Collapse blank lines only”, or skip it, since code needs every line break exactly where it is.

Up to 100,000 characters per run. Oversized edits are rejected without replacing your previous text. Your input, options and result are saved in this browser tab for Refresh and Back. Use as input saves the cleaned version as your new source text.
