Will It Fit? Count Before You Post
General counts use visible characters. X uses weighted counting with URLs at 23 units and emoji/CJK at 2. Other platform counts are estimates; verify in the destination composer. Preview targets and suggested lengths are recommendations, not publishing limits.

How to Use the Free Social Media Character Counter
Counting is instant (every keystroke updates the bars).
Each row shows a weighted limit, an estimated platform count, a preview target or a recommended length. A recommendation is highlighted in amber if you go over it. That does not affect publishing, but it is important that you check the destination composer.
Cross post with an eye on the real limits of each platform. X has a 280-unit weighted limit on standard posts. SEO lengths are guidelines.
100% Free — Here Is Why That Is Sustainable
No server needed: the tool runs as JavaScript in your browser, therefore not costing us anything per use. This is the reason why it's free, and why your grades, notes, or signatures remain on your device.
Only in your browser. The draft sits in sessionStorage for this tab, so Refresh or Back won't lose it, and none of it goes to our server for counting. Hit Clear and the draft is deleted, counters reset.
The Social Media Character Counter in Real Student Life
Character count for every platform at once
Type or paste your post and the character count is calculated as you write: visible characters, words, characters without spaces and lines.
Each platform gets its own bar, so one character counter tool covers X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. Each row says whether it is a limit, an estimate or a recommended length, and only X uses its official weighted rules.
Twitter character limit, and how X counts
The twitter character limit for a regular post is 280 weighted units, and with X Premium a long post can reach 25,000.
This twitter character counter uses the official rules defined by twitter-text: links are worth 23 units, emojis or CJK characters 2 units. That is why the X row and the plain char count might be different.
Instagram caption character limit and LinkedIn posts
The instagram caption character limit is 2,200, but only about the first 125 characters show before more, so the instagram character counter tracks both.
For LinkedIn there are rows for the post itself (the linkedin post character limit is estimated at 3,000) and the headline (220). Threads does not have a row, so we recommend checking the threads character limit in the app against the number shown.
A meta description length checker too
It can also be used as a meta description length checker. A common rule of thumb is to aim for 155 to 160 characters, and title tags should be around 60.
These are targets for writing, not Google limits, and Google may shorten or rewrite the snippet. Simply paste in your draft title or description and keep shortening it until the row stops turning amber.
How many characters is this?
How many characters is this paragraph? The first number tells you: the character count with spaces, line breaks included.
The numbers next to it show the count without spaces and the word character count. Need a letter counter or a quick character checker for a bio or an application? Same box.
Why not use any character counter?
A normal counter gives one number, while X counts links as 23 and emojis as 2, so a post that fits by the normal count may still exceed the limit. Here the X row follows the official rules, and every other row says whether it is a hard limit, an estimate or a recommendation.
You see which number matters for the place you are posting.
Everyday users of this tool
People who post the same thing everywhere and need it to fit, students with a strict limit on an application field, marketers writing SEO titles, and anyone burned by a cut-off post once.
Three fixes that solve most problems
- The X count differs from the total. That is expected. X counts links as 23 and emoji or CJK characters as 2; the total above counts visible characters.
- A bar turned red or amber. Don't panic. Red only says the estimate is over the listed limit and amber that you're beyond a suggested length. Check the real composer before you hit post.
- A long paste did nothing. It probably went over 100,000 characters. In that case the paste is ignored and your old text is kept, so try a smaller chunk.
Same tool, many names
No matter how you expressed yourself, this is your page: one fast social media character counter that respects both your time and your privacy, not 12 poor clones lying around the web. Feel free to bookmark it by any name you choose:

One page for each job is deliberate. Near-identical pages for every wording are standard SEO, and they're the reason looking for a basic tool is a slog. We'd rather build one good page that's quick, complete and upfront about what it can't do.
This is why the navigation above links to complete tool names and not cute nicknames: when your next job comes around, you will know where to go by reading, not guessing. The whole set is designed for someone in a rush who has never seen it before, and on a deadline, that is all of us.
Social Media Character Counter FAQ
X standard posts are limited to 280 weighted units, while the Premium long-post row uses 25,000. The local official twitter-text parser counts each detected URL as 23, and emoji and CJK as 2 (supported joined emoji included). General visible-character counts are shown separately.
There's no official number. Around 155 to 160 characters is what most people write to, and Google may still shorten or rewrite your snippet for a given query or screen. So the title and description rows are suggested lengths only.
The caption row is an estimate of how many of the 2,200 characters you are using. The 125-character row gives a rough idea of what your preview will look like, but it will vary depending on the layout and device used. Always double check your final caption on Instagram.
In the general counter, a joined family emoji is one visible character (when grapheme segmentation is available in your browser). X counts a supported emoji sequence as 2 weighted units. Other platforms may count differently, so their rows are estimates.
Note that there can be differences between visible characters, Unicode code points and UTF-16 units. The general statistics show visible characters (including spaces and line breaks). X shows its official weighted count. The other platforms are an approximation.
Up to 100,000 characters. Oversized typing or pasting is rejected without replacing your previous text, and accepted text is saved in full.
Only in your browser. The draft sits in sessionStorage for this tab, so Refresh or Back won't lose it, and none of it goes to our server for counting. Hit Clear and the draft is deleted, counters reset.
