Why This Text Compare Is Different

A text compare tool that is absolutely free: just paste two versions to see all the changes made. Additions are colored green and deletions are crossed out in red, and you can compare by words, lines or characters right in your browser.

Step by step

How to Use the Free Text Compare

Paste the original on the left

The version you began with: your draft, the version you submitted, the original document.

Paste the new version on the right

What came back, or what you have now.

Compare

Green indicates additions. Red strike-through indicates deletions. Use line mode for code and lists, and character mode for Chinese, Japanese and Thai, as there are no spaces between words.

The honest part

100% Free — Here Is Why That Is Sustainable

No server needed: the tool runs as JavaScript in your browser, therefore not costing us anything per use. This is the reason why it's free, and why your grades, notes, or signatures remain on your device.

No. The comparison takes place right inside your browser, which is important if the two texts are unpublished or confidential documents.

The Text Compare in Real Student Life

How it works

How to compare two texts

Paste the original into the left box and the new version into the right box, then click Compare.

This text compare tool highlights additions in green and deletions in red with a strikethrough, and unchanged text appears as normal. It is a text diff you read like a page.

Diff checker

A diff checker for prose and code

Words is the default option and is ideal for essays. Lines will turn it into a diff tool for code, lists and configuration files.

Characters will handle languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which have no spaces between the words. If ignore extra spaces or ignore case is turned on, the difference checker will ignore the changes that you don’t care about.

Documents

Compare two Word documents, or any two documents

Simply open your two word documents, copy the text from each and paste it into its own box. That is how to compare two word documents, and you can do the same with PDFs, Google Docs and emails: compare two documents without uploading any files.

For long documents, compare 2 word documents section by section. Each box can take up to 100,000 characters.

Lists

Compare two lists line by line

Compare two lists (one item per line) by switching to Lines mode. Green indicates new lines and red indicates missing lines. This is good for seeing who has dropped off a roster, or identifying changes to keywords.

The same text comparison is also useful for any file compare job where you can copy and paste the text, like CSV lines or config files.

Private

Diff online, with nothing uploaded

Many sites that offer a diff online post both documents to their server. This document comparison tool works fully within your browser, so if you are comparing an unpublished manuscript or a contract, you can be sure nothing is uploaded.

Use this text difference checker on confidential drafts without signing up. Texts and settings stay in this browser tab.

Eyes vs diff

Why not just read both versions?

When viewing two versions of a long page side-by-side, you will immediately see the rewritten paragraph. However, you may not notice the other changes. A “not” has been removed. A date has been altered and a number has been changed. Each of these changes can be seen thanks to the diff, even a change of one character.

That is why careful editors check with a diff instead of rereading.

Who uses it

Everyday users of this tool

Students reviewing what changes their supervisor made, writers who compare drafts, developers who diff code and configuration, and everyone who reviews a contract that came back “with a few small edits”.

If something goes wrong

Three fixes that solve most problems

  • Everything is marked as changed. Different line breaks or extra spaces can make the whole thing light up. Turn on ignore extra spaces (it's on by default) and try again, or switch to Lines for code.
  • Chinese or Japanese looks wrong. Switch to Characters. Words mode looks for spaces between words, which Chinese, Japanese and Thai simply don't use.
  • A long text is rejected. Probably too long: one box takes up to 100,000 characters. Do it section by section, and for a heavily edited text, give Lines a try.

Is it really free, with no catch?

Of course: no registration, no watermark and no daily paywall. It will still be here next semester.

One page for each job is deliberate. Near-identical pages for every wording are standard SEO, and they're the reason looking for a basic tool is a slog. We'd rather build one good page that's quick, complete and upfront about what it can't do.

This is why the navigation above links to complete tool names and not cute nicknames: when your next job comes around, you will know where to go by reading, not guessing. The whole set is designed for someone in a rush who has never seen it before, and on a deadline, that is all of us.

Text Compare FAQ

Left box: the original. Right box: the new version. Click Compare. Green is new text, red with a strikethrough is removed text, plain is unchanged. That's all, and nothing leaves your browser.

The word mode is suitable for writing text and is the default. The line mode can be used for code, lists and configuration files where complete lines change. The character mode can be used for scripts where there are no spaces between words such as in Chinese and Japanese.

When ignore extra spaces is turned on, both Words and Characters will ignore any additional white space (including line breaks) and leading/trailing spaces. Lines will maintain the line breaks but will ignore any indentation and multiple spaces. Ignore case can be turned on to ignore capitals.

This is the most common use. Paste the version you sent and the version you got back to see all the meaningful changes, including small cuts that are easy to miss.

Each box can hold up to 100,000 characters. An edit over that limit is rejected and your current text stays. For large or highly changed documents you may want to compare in smaller chunks or use Lines mode. Your texts and comparison options will be stored in this tab of your browser.

No. The comparison takes place right inside your browser, which is important if the two texts are unpublished or confidential documents.
